About REALTORS Association of New Mexico

ABOUT RANM

The REALTORS® Association of New Mexico, The Voice for Real Estate in New Mexico, is a state-wide trade association representing over 7,100 members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate markets throughout New Mexico.  The REALTORS® Association of New Mexico is the business and public policy advocate for its members and the consumers they serve.

RANM was chartered in 1949 by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (NAR).  NAR, The Voice for Real Estate®, is the world’s largest professional association.  The term REALTOR® is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics.

Member Boards are the foundation of organized real estate.  There are 19 Member Boards in New Mexico  RANM supports these boards in many ways and serves as liaison between local boards and NAR.  Membership in a Member Board automatically extends a real estate professional’s membership to the state association and national association.

RANM is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of elected offices and representatives from each Member Board.  The Board of Directors meets a minimum of two times each year and the Executive Committee carries on the business of the association between Board meetings.

RANM has established a Benevolent Fund, a public charity corporation, to provide assistance for members of the RANM family who have encountered severe financial hardship for reasons beyond their control.  All donations made to the fund are tax deductible.

When Is a Real Estate Agent a REALTOR®?

“Real Estate Practitioner” is a generic term that can be used by anyone with a license to sell real estate.  The Real Estate Commission is the licensing agency that governs the rules, regulations, and other licensing requirements in New Mexico.  Not everyone who sells real estate can call himself a REALTOR®.

A real estate practitioner is a REALTOR® when he or she becomes a member of a Member Board, State Association, and the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, the world's largest professional association.  The term "REALTOR®" is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the REALTORS® organization and abides by a strict Code of Ethics.

Willingness to accept and abide by the Code of Ethics of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® is the single, most outstanding characteristic that sets REALTORS® apart from other real estate practitioners.  The Code of Ethics, which was first adopted on July 29, 1913, is a living document, responsive to content changes in the law and industry.  The Code has been revised several times through the years to reflect current developments in professional real estate practice.  The term REALTOR® has come to represent competency, fairness and high integrity.  These qualities stem from voluntary adherence to an ideal of moral conduct in real estate business practices.

REALTOR® membership also encourages high professional standards through required educational programs, professional certifications, and principles of real estate sales practices.

A REALTOR® can provide access to Multiple Listing Service (MLS) information. Using, this, members are able to cooperate with each other in the sale and purchase of homes, land, and commercial and income properties. This regulated sharing of information enables participating REALTOR® members to more effectively assist customers and clients to buy and sell property.

A REALTOR® will:

  • Help you find the perfect match between what you can afford and the home that best suits your needs.
  • Access all the properties for sale in your desired area through the Multiple Listing Service.
  • Negotiate for you:  Once you’ve found the home you want to buy, your REALTOR® will write up your offer and present it to the seller.
  • Get the right price:  REALTORS® know the market inside and out, getting you the best price possible, whether you are buying or selling.
  • Protect your rights:  Real estate laws have become increasingly complicated and your REALTOR® is specially trained to assist you.
  • Allow you to make your own decision:  A professional works for YOU and respects your opinions.

  • Check out the National Association’s  Public Awareness Campaign television and radio spots that encourage consumers to rely on the expertise and integrity of REALTORS®.
